1980年9月—1987年6月于北京师范大学生物学系学习，获理学学士和硕士学位。1987年毕业后留校任教，从事教学与科研工作。1988年6月—1989年5月在英国作访问学者。1993年11月—1994年3月赴南极考察。1994年9月－1998年7月在职攻读生态学博士学位。1998年12—2001年12月任北京师范大学生命科学学院副院长。


== 成就 ==
曾主持国家自然科学基金项目、教育部博士点基金项目、973项目专题以及国际合作项目。在国内外已发表论文80多篇。1994年获全国首届郑作新鸟类科学青年奖。1998年获教育部科技进步二等奖，2000年获国家自然科学二等奖（第二完成人）。2001年享受国务院政府特殊津贴。

珍稀濒危雉类的生态生物学：利用无线电遥测等手段对白冠长尾雉、褐马鸡等鸟类的栖息地选择、活动区、繁殖生态、婚配制度、扩散生态学、生活史对策等进行研究。
鸟类的遗传多样性与分子进化：利用DNA序列分析的方法对、、、、、等鸟类类群的、地理种群的遗传结构、性别比例、遗传多样性等进行研究。
湿地鸟类的时空分布格局：通过长期、连续的调查和监测，对唐山沿海、天津北大港、等典型的、分布格局、迁徙规律以及动态变化进行研究。
北京地区的鸟类多样性与保护：根据所建立的北京市鸟类多样性的数据库，对北京市鸟类资源的变化进行长期监测。以等鸟类为代表，探讨城市化对鸟类生存的影响。
